Immortals Fenyx Rising to get Polynesian-themed spin-off
Immortals Fenyx Rising is going to get a spin-off, one steeped in Polynesian mythology, rather than the Greek flavour of the original.
Speaking on the Games Mess Decides podcast (via VGC), journalist Jeff Grubb spoke about claims he had received from an anonymous source. These were the following:
“Ubisoft Quebec‘s sequel to Immortals Fenyx Rising is not a proper sequel. It’s more of a spin-off. The production name of the game is called Oxygen. It’s based on Hawaiian Polynesian culture this time around. It still has a God narrator. They try to still be visually stylised but it’s less of a copy of Breath of the Wild.
“It’s in early pre-production, seen some concept art, it’s coming maybe 2025.”
Immortals Fenyx Rising was—and still is—one of the few clear Breath of the Wild clones. This was no bad thing, as it had, apparently, much charm of its own. Ubisoft originally announced the game as Gods and Monsters, before changing its title. I prefer the old title, frankly. It reminded me of the film, starring Ian McKellen and Brendan Fraser, of the same name.
Anyway, a Polynesian spin-off sounds intriguing, because games have had more than enough of Greek myth. The Mark of Kri, on the PlayStation 2, is notable for being Polynesian-themed. It was developed by San Diego Studio, who, these days, work solely on MLB The Show. Sad.
