Riot Games x AWS collaboration to transform esports content creation and distribution in the cloud

The collaboration between Riot Games and Amazon Web Services (AWS) will revolutionize the way Riot’s esports content is produced and shared in the cloud. Riot is the first business to reinvent how fans interact with League of Legends (LoL), Valorant, and League of Legends: Wild Rift events using AWS’s data analytics integration for esports broadcasts.

Riot has chosen AWS as its official cloud supplier for cloud artificial intelligence (AI), cloud machine learning (ML), cloud deep learning (DL), and cloud services as part of this international partnership.

Riot Games and AWS collaborate to provide new ways to experience esports

In order to revolutionize how they build and deliver content for their games and give gamers the greatest possible gaming experience, Riot presently uses AWS’s services across all of its titles. Currently, Riot is collaborating with AWS to improve the worldwide esports event broadcasts it produces for the Valorant Champions Tour (VCT), Wild Rift Esports, and LoL Esports throughout each competitive season.

Riot will utilize AWS’s wide range of cloud capabilities to offer fans the following fresh perspectives and experiences, much like the in-depth statistics offered to major international sports leagues.

Riot Games has a long-term vision to bring joy to billions of fans around the world through our esports, and we’re extremely excited to work with AWS to level up the Riot Esports experience. The wide-ranging solutions and expertise of AWS will enhance Riot Games’ esports broadcasts and engage esports fans worldwide. From reimagining how fans view our events and content, to interacting with other players, AWS unlocks endless opportunities for Riot to shape the future of sport.

First-ever AWS esports stats

In order to enlighten and educate spectators on important data elements that are assisting a team in winning, Riot and AWS will offer Stats powered by AWS throughout esports broadcasts. These stats will appear before, during, and after Riot’s various worldwide esports broadcasts.

Voting by fans will determine which esports statistics are created first and made public during broadcasts of the League of Legends World Championship (Worlds) this autumn and Valorant Champions in September 2022.

AWS Global Power Rankings

Riot will introduce AWS Global Power Rankings, which will analyze competitive gameplay using AWS’ analytics capabilities. As a result, during gameplay, rankings of the best professional teams in LoL Esports, VCT, and Wild Rift Esports will be generated in close to real-time.

Throughout the competitive season, esports fans can take part in bracket challenges and compete for rewards by properly picking the teams who advance to each championship event. Pick’em powered by AWS will bring new ways for fans to select teams based on tournament statistics and compete for rewards. It is built on AWS’s machine learning technology.

This fall, fan-created teams will develop systems that could be used by each sport during a hackathon event organized by Riot and AWS, with Power Rankings and/or Pick’em as one of the featured projects. In order to build out and optimize the solution to power the esports statistics, Riot and AWS will jointly design an initial build of the platform and then give users access to resources from AWS and data from Riot.

Riot and AWS to create a global production for a global fanbase

Riot and AWS are committed to making esports accessible to all fans, regardless of where they live, how they choose to watch, or what language they use. Riot is launching Project Stryker, a collection of cloud-first remote broadcast centers (RBC) that make use of AWS capabilities, in order to do this.

These resources will help Riot achieve its present and future goals of reinventing the entertainment experience in a variety of fields outside of esports and analytics/stats, including game development, animation, and music production.

These solutions will be expandable to accommodate their fans’ expanding needs, ushering in a new era of esports content creation. Riot Games will use a 50,000-square-foot facility in Dublin and a second facility in the greater Seattle area that will go online later this year, built on strategically placed RBCs around the world, to produce and support live content anywhere in the world at any time of day, regardless of the location of the event. AWS will hold the sole naming rights to each remote broadcast center as part of this partnership.

Riot and AWS continue to grow their relationship

Together, Riot Games and Amazon have produced Twitch esports broadcasts and Prime Gaming content drops for Riot games. AWS is currently a sponsor of Riot Games’ international esports competitions, including LoL Esports, the Valorant Champions Tour, and Wild Rift Esports. Riot and AWS will also work together to create fresh social impact initiatives in an effort to broaden accessibility and inclusion in the competitive esports space.
